I’m a big sucker for fairytale retellings, although this year I didn’t pick up any (!) yet. Briarheart is a sleeping beauty one, but it doesn’t focus on Aurora, but rather on her stepsister. Miriam doesn’t hate Aurora but vows to protect her along with five others:
“We were Aurora’s Companions. And we would guard her and one another against all odds.”
Expect no romance on this one, as the book falls in the upper middle grade, low young adult spectrum. Nonetheless, Briarheart will appeal to fans of retellings looking for a quick magical ride with strong heroines and heavy focus on family bonds.

About Mercedes Lackey
Mercedes entered this world on June 24, 1950, in Chicago, had a normal childhood and graduated from Purdue University in 1972. During the late 70’s she worked as an artist’s model and then went into the computer programming field, ending up with American Airlines in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In addition to her fantasy writing, she has written lyrics for and recorded nearly fifty songs for Firebird Arts & Music, a small recording company specializing in science fiction folk music.
