In a Queendom divided, can one girl unite the realms?

Jacs, an inventor’s apprentice from the Lower Realm, has only ever dreamed of what the land among the clouds holds. That is until she finds a letter from Connor, an Upperite boy hoping to learn more about the land below. Little does Jacs know, Connor is actually Prince Cornelius of the Queendom of Frea. With wooden boats and hot air balloons, the two begin a secret correspondence. But their friendship is divided by a heavily-guarded bridge and an inescapable prejudice.

The strength of their bond was thought to transcend distance and time, but when the royal family visits the Lower Realm, the Queendom’s feud is reignited.

To save her people, Jacs must infiltrate the Upper Realm and earn her place to compete in the Contest of Queens. In a story about friendship, love, bravery, and defying gravity, Jacs will strive to prove that a Queendom is strongest when united.

“This book is a must read . . . playful and imaginative.” —Cailyn Heintzelman, Morton Grove Public Library

❧ Bookish Coven Rating

4 Stars

It’s Sunday, he thought. Finally. Every good adventure starts on a Sunday.

My 2022 reading started with a bang! Contest of Queens was a lovely read. I was hooked from page one! The author, Jordan H. Bartlett weaves a wonderful world that you begin to piece together through the letters our two protagonists begin to exchange. I thought that was very clever.

Matters of the heart rarely have blueprints.

Both Conor and Jacs were so adorable!! The whole pacing was very naturally done and the writing although not flowery, it was beautiful!
Of course, the story is not all roses, as our two protagonists’ world is deeply divided to the Upper and Lower Realm and when a tragic set of events brings them to meet things will become.. interesting!!
The whole lore of the world was very well done and I loved the whole reverse ruler monarch idea: the queen is the one who rules and the king is a merely advisor. It was such a refreshing take!
Overall, this debut was a fantastic read! Definitely a recommendation!
